Solution Description (Summary):

Introduce voting reform and rewards for bipartisan actions by elected officials. This includes ranked choice voting, rewarding members that vote against their party, pursuing bipartisan redistricting, and introducing open primaries.

Issues it could fix/Other benefits:
Solution Cost/Timeframe:
  • Cost/Timeline explanation: Passing laws requires money and time, as well as money and time to develop a new tool   Agree     Disagree
  • Cost Estimate: Take a decent city's budget (<$100 Million)   Agree     Disagree
  • Time Estimate: Won't be done for a while (<10 years)   Agree     Disagree

Types & Difficulty for Change:

(Identifies what types of activities are needed. Will this solution need to change societal views)

  • These would require a number of new laws or legal actions in order to pass reforms. (Major change to Political/legal)   Agree     Disagree
  • Need tools and incentives to track and reward bi-partisanship by elected officials. (Minor change to New tool/technology)   Agree     Disagree
Additional Details:
  • Ranked choice is when voters rank their candidates (or option) in a sequence of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. Results are tallied, and candidates are eliminated until the only remaining candidate received majority of votes. Ranked choice voting promotes that the majority gets elected, discourages overly negative campaigning, and provides more choice for voters.    Agree     Disagree
  • Methods to reward bipartisan voting would involve tracking and publicizing bipartisan promises and voting. It would also require incentives (likely campaign contributions) that would reward these bipartisan voters.    Agree     Disagree
  • Polarization is made worse by partisan gerrymandering. A solution is to pass the Freedom to Vote Act.    Agree     Disagree
  • Polarization could also be reduced by pursuing open primaries (instead of primaries based on party). Open primaries can be done by signature based ballot initiatives for 24 states    Agree     Disagree
